Gi Washing Guide: how to take care of your martial arts uniform
Below are answers to the most common questions we receive about washing martial arts uniforms. Proper care of your karategi and judogi extends their lifespan, keeping them in excellent condition.
Does the Gi shrink after the first wash?
Yes, the Gi tends to shrink after the first wash, especially if it is made from 100% cotton or has a high cotton content. This shrinkage primarily affects the length of the jacket, pants, and sleeves. For example, a karategi for someone 180 cm tall, made from 100% cotton, can shrink by approximately 3.5 – 4.0 cm in length and around 3.5 cm per sleeve. On average, the reduction in length for cotton karategis and judogis is about 4%.
Shrinkage mainly occurs in length, while the reduction in width is minimal and usually negligible. If washed correctly, shrinkage occurs only after the first wash.
What Is the best temperature for washing the Gi?
For the first wash of white judogis and karategis made from cotton or cotton blends, a temperature between 60°C and 70°C is recommended to allow the fabric to complete its natural shrinkage. For subsequent washes, it is preferable to use a temperature of 30°C.
Colored uniforms and polyester karategis should always be washed at 30°C to avoid fading or damage.
Can I wash a white Gi with colored items?
No, it is essential to wash white Gis separately from colored items to avoid color transfer, which can compromise the original appearance of the uniform.
What spin cycle should I use?
Use a slow spin cycle—around 600 rpm—to avoid damaging the fabric.
Should I turn the Gi inside out before washing?
Yes, turning the Gi inside out before washing helps preserve the quality of the outer fabric over time.
What detergent should I use?
Use a detergent suitable for low-temperature washes. Avoid harsh detergents, and never use bleach, as it can damage the fabric fibers.
Can I put the Gi in the dryer?
It is preferable to avoid using a dryer. The heat can cause additional shrinkage, compounding the natural shrinkage that occurs during the first wash.
How should I dry the Gi properly?
After washing, hang your judogi or karategi on a hanger, ensuring the natural folds are maintained to minimize the need for ironing. Avoid direct sunlight, as it can fade colors and cause yellowing of white uniforms.
Can I wash the Belt?
Yes, but it should be washed separately from the uniform, especially if the uniform is white, to avoid color transfer. Hand-washing the belt in lukewarm water with a gentle detergent is recommended.
